Fall 2021
Classes Taken: CHEM 142 (General Chemistry). MATH 124 (Calculus with Analytic Geometry I), ENGR 401 (Leadership Development to Promote Equity in Engineering Relationships), GEN ST 199, HONORS 100, ENGR 101
Coming into the quarter as engineering undeclared, I was looking to become a pre-med engineering student. As a result, I decided to join many pre-med clubs at UW. However, I soon realized that medical school wasn’t for me. The cost and the long commitment weren’t practical. Jumping from pre-med clubs, I attended pre-pharmacy, pre-dentistry, and ASME meetings only to realize that these fields did not fit me as well.
My realization of my intended major came from my work in the Nance Lab. I helped my mentor Hawley and PI Dr. Nance image and analyzed the brain slices of rats. This mentorship has made me realize my passion for the computational side of science (through my work on Python, excel, and Fiji) more than the medical side.
Winter 2021
Classes Taken: CSE 142 (Computer Programming I), CSE 390 (Special Topics in Computer Science), MATH 126 (Calculus with Analytic Geometry III), ECON 200 (Introduction to Microeconomics)
I started to join clubs and programs this quarter. One big-time commitment has been the HPS (Human powered submarine) club, where students all collaborate to create a submarine that looks like a bicycle on the inside – hence, human-powered. I joined the electrical and safety subcommittee, and I got to meet seniors who are pursuing majors of my interest. They taught me how to use Arduino, CAD, and C++.
Through my ENGR 401 class last quarter, I joined the PEERS leaders program at the COE. There, I got to be a resource for students looking for support in diversity and help the college with its diversity programs.
Spring 2021
Classes Taken: CSE 143 (Computer Programming II), CSE 390 (Special Topics in Computer Science), PHYS 121 (Mechanics), ENGR 231 (Introduction to Technical Communication)
I am still involved with HPS (Human powered submarine) club. I mainly assisted my lead to develop the safety system which includes the DPS (dead person switch), EPL (emergency pull line), and the buoy. Thanks to my commitment, I have been selected to be their safety lead next year. Although I lack experience, I hope that jumping into a leadership role will allow me to learn exponentially.
Unfortunately, this year has been the last year in the PEERS program as they are disbanding at the end of this year. This is due to the creation of the DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) department at UW. I hope I can look for other ways to make an impact outside of STEM. I have enjoyed giving feedback to the DEI and improving their system to promote diversity.
