Adaptive Drone Flight Using Real‑Time 5G RF Data

2025 • Capstone Project at the University of Washington

Abstract

Our project with T‑Mobile, Adaptive Drone Flight Using Real‑Time 5G RF Data, explores how drones can navigate 3D space to maintain optimal 5G signal strength. Traditional RF planning overlooks altitude, causing drones to suffer from signal fading due to antenna down‑tilt and multipath effects. We collect real‑time RF measurements across varied altitudes, visualize RF environments, simulate 3D RF propagation, and develop a machine learning‑based adaptive flight algorithm. Additional work includes exploring next‑gen simulation platforms, 3D coverage mapping, statistical analysis of RF reliability, and integration with drone control systems to enable responsive, connectivity‑aware flight behavior.
